THE APPLICATION PROCESS

  1. If there is a choice, decide what type of application you are going to use.  Here are some choices you might have:
    1. Online Applications – go to the college website and follow the directions. (Note: Some online applications have a page to print, which must be given to the Guidance office and will be mailed with your official transcript.) paper application for each college Peterson’s website: http://www.petersons.com/  offers links to several college applications or to the Common Application that is required by the college. www.PrincetonReview.com– has many links to college applications and is a timesaver if more than one of your schools is at the site since it allows you to save the personal information that goes onto all applications in a file, which can be transferred, to each application. 
    2. Common Application– several colleges have agreed to accept this application.  It is available in a paper version or can be downloaded from http://www.commonapp.org/

(To make requests for official transcripts:  Please turn in a request to the Guidance Office at least 10 school days prior to the mailing deadline for your application/transcript

An “official” transcript is required for college applications, most scholarship applications and is often needed by auto insurance companies. “Official” copies require a counselor’s signature and school seal. Unofficial transcripts are issued for a student’s own use.
  3. Read instructions carefully.
  4. Fill in all the blanks.  If questions are not relevant, write “N/A” or use a dash.
  5. When completing paper applications, type or print.  If printing, use ink.  HINT: It’s a good idea to photocopy an entire application and use the copy as a rough draft.
  6. If the application form does not provide adequate space to list extracurricular activities, job experiences, etc., include a separate page or resume.  Make sure that each additional page includes your name and a clear heading.
  7. If an essay is required, use a computer or typewriter unless instructed otherwise.
  8. Confidential recommendations and official transcripts must always be mailed by the Guidance office directly to the college.
