Which type of college fits you?
Decide whether to start at a two-year state college or a four-year state university:
- State universities are four-year institutions offering courses and programs leading to bachelor’s, master’s and advanced degrees.
- Technical colleges are two-year colleges that teach knowledge and skills leading to specific careers.
- Community colleges are two-year colleges that can get you started on a bachelor’s degree. You can take your first two years of college at a community college and then transfer to a four-year college or university to complete your degree. Community colleges also offer career programs leading directly to a job.
- Combined community and technical colleges offer technical and community college programs. You can get a start on a bachelor’s degree and transfer after two years, just like you can at a community college. Or you can enroll in a technical program and learn skills that lead directly to a career, just like you can at a technical college.
